Previously, He was a professional ice hockey winger who participated with the Chicago Blackhawks, Dallas Stars in the National Hockey League (NHL) as well as San Jose Sharks.

Adam on July 1, 2010, departed the Blackhawks as a free agent and signed at $1.15 million annually with the Dallas Stars a two-year deal. Besides the expiration of his contract with the Stars, Adam on July 1, 2012, signed a four-year deal at $1.8 million annually with the San Jose Sharks, reuniting with a Campus of Wisconsin teammate Joe Pavelski.

On November 21, 2014, Adam was placed on waivers by the Sharks during the 2014–15 season and was sent down to play with the Worcester Sharks an affiliate of the AHL. The Chicago Wolves on January 14, 2015, acquired Adam via loan. Following finishing the season with the Wolves, He was bought out on June 19, 2015, from the last year of his contract delivering him to free agency with the Sharks.
