In 1990, His international career started appearing in the England under-21 under Dave Sexton. Alan scored 13 times in 11 games and his record has not been beaten ever since. Alan then played for England B in 1992 but did not score a goal.
Shearer participated in the 1998 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Moldova, UEFA Euro 1996, and in UEFA Euro 2000 qualifier against Luxembourg. He retired from his International career in 2000 with 30 goals scored. In addition, Alan declined an offer to be assistant manager to Steve McClaren after the 2006 World Cup.
