Alvin Leonard Bragg Jr. is a New York City politician and lawyer who now serves as the New York County District Attorney for Manhattan. He was the first African American elected to that position in 2021. He formerly worked as the New York State Attorney General’s chief deputy and as an assistant United States Attorney in the Southern District of New York.

Bragg clerked for federal district judge Robert P. Patterson Jr. before becoming an associate at the legal firm Morvillo Abramowitz Grand Iason & Anello, where he concentrated on white-collar fraud and civil rights problems. In 2003, he joined the office of New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer before becoming the New York City Council’s chief of litigation and investigations. He resigned from the city council in 2009 to work as an assistant US Attorney in the Southern District of New York.

In June 2019, he announced his candidacy for the Democratic Party nomination for New York County District Attorney, a position previously held by Cyrus Vance Jr., who did not seek reelection.  Following the Democratic primary on June 22, 2021, he led in the reported vote count, and Tali Farhadian Weinstein conceded the primary to Bragg on July 2. He beat Republican Thomas Kenniff in the main election on November 2, 2021, becoming the first African-American to be elected New York County District Attorney. He was inaugurated on January 1, 2022.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, the office’s first Black DA, is a white-collar crimes expert who is supervising the investigation into Trump that resulted in the first ex-president indictment. He has provided little specifics about the investigation, which began under his predecessor, Cyrus Vance, in 2019.

His office is investigating Trump’s alleged role in a $130,000 “hush-money” payment to porn actress Stormy Daniels in 2016, who said she slept with Trump in 2006. The insider revealed Thursday that a grand jury voted to indict the former president. The particular substance and charges of the indictment have not yet been made public. It’s also unclear whether Trump has any co-defendants in the case.

The New York Times reported on November 21, 2022, that the district attorney’s office “has sought to jump-start its criminal investigation” into Trump’s alleged “hush-money payment to a porn star who said she had an affair with Mr. Trump.” He acknowledged to CNN in January 2023 that the investigation was still ongoing. The office presented information to a grand jury on January 30 showing Trump’s role in the payment. Trump was arrested on April 4 after being indicted on March 30.
