Andre Matos Career

Matos began his musical training at the age of ten, when his parents gave him his first piano. He used to get together with his mates as a teen to listen to their favorite bands. Soon after, they began learning to play music as well, and Matos joined Viper, his first band. When he was 13 years old, the band performed for the first time on April 8, 1985. The Kil, their first demo cassette, was recorded the same year.

The piano and keyboard were always his go-to instruments. Matos quit Viper as the band’s musical style began to shift. He’d developed an interest in classical music, and he thought his musical perspective was beginning to diverge from that of the other band members, who preferred heavier, “crude” music. Matos returned to school after leaving Viper and completed his education in music, specializing on jazz.

Angra was formed in 1991, and with the publication of their first album, Angels Cry, in 1993, the band became well-known in Japan and Europe. Fireworks and Holy Land were released afterwards. Angra’s sound evolved from Helloween-inspired melodic speed metal to a unique mixture of heavy metal, classical music, and traditional Brazilian influences, earning them critical acclaim throughout the world.

Matos, Luis Mariutti, and Ricardo Confessori quit Angra in 2000 due to a disagreement with guitarists Rafael Bittencourt and Kiko Loureiro over the band’s administration. Matos continued with Mariutti and Confessori, and they established the band Shaman with Mariutti’s brother Hugo on guitar.. The song “Fairy Tale,” which was featured in the Brazilian soap series Beijo do Vampiro, catapulted the band to fame. Ritual, their debut album, sold over 200.000 copies globally in its first year, spawning a tour with 150 shows around the world and a DVD called Ritualive.

Prior to his death, Matos was continuing his solo career with the Mariutti brothers, but he frequently stated that calling it a solo career was a mistake; it was a band with his name, and they all chose so because of his worldwide reputation and repeated departure from previous bands. Time to Be Free, their first album, was a themed record with lyrics about Matos’ departure from Shama.
