In Atlanta, Thomas attended Pace Academy. After graduating from high school, he competed in the Army All-American Game. On July 10, 2016, he committed to Georgia, beating out offers from Alabama, Auburn, Florida, and others. He started every game at right tackle as a true freshman, earning him Freshman All-American honors at the end of the season. For his sophomore season, he moved to left tackle. He injured his left ankle against South Carolina and did not return against Middle Tennessee.

Thomas was named SEC offensive lineman of the week after assisting in 331 rushing yards against Kentucky. Following the season, he was named a first-team All-American and first-team All-SEC.

In the winter following his sophomore season, he was also invited to the NCAA Elite Football Synopsium, which helps athletes prepare for the transition from college to the NFL. He was projected as a potential first-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft before his junior season if he chose to leave Georgia after his junior year. He announced on December 17, 2019, that he would forego his senior year and enter the 2020 NFL Draft, thus skipping the 2020 Sugar Bowl.
