He stayed with the Cavaliers for two more seasons, averaging 17 points per game and shooting a career-high 47.5% from the field in 82 games in 1978-79. The Cavaliers, on the other hand, failed to make the playoffs for the first time since 1975, finishing with a 30-52 record. In addition, during Austin’s final season with the team, the team failed to make the playoffs.
He played for Cleveland for nine years, averaging 16.2 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game. His final season in the NBA would be in 1980-81. On February 21, 2008, during the men’s basketball game between Pittsburgh and Notre Dame. Austin was honored as Notre Dame’s all-time top scorer.
