Upon graduating, he accepted a $25-per-week job as an assistant to Baltimore Colts head coach Ted Marchibroda in the year 1975. In 1976, Belichick joined the Detroit Lions as their assistant special teams coach before adding wide receivers and tight ends to his coaching duties in 1977. On January 9, 1978, he was dismissed alongside head coach Tommy Hudspeth and the rest of the coaching staff. Moreover, Belichick spent the 1978 season with the Denver Broncos as their defensive assistant and assistant special teams coach.
