He commenced his coaching career at Hofstra University. During his time there, he worked as an assistant to head coach Dick Berg for three consecutive years. He then took over as the head coach at Division II Kutztown, he worked here for two consecutive years and set the single-season record for wins his second year before working as the head coach at St. Francis College in 1984.

During the time, he was employed as the youngest head coach at 27 years old at Division I men’s basketball. While with the Terriers he did not have a winning season but won the College’s first postseason game in over 30 years.

In 1988, he moved to Sweden to coach the Alvik Professional Basketball Club. Then moved to work as the head coach after one year in Sweden at Division III Catholic University. Then he went to St. Mary’s in Maryland, and together with his team, he got that school’s first winning season ever in 1994 at the NCAA level.
