From 1983 to 1985, he worked as a science reporter for the Chicago Sun-Times. From 1977 to 1981, he also taught psychology at Widener University and other Chicago-area colleges. Parallel Time, his memoir, was a nominee for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize and won the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award in 1994.
