Brent has authored an essay called Just Walk on By. In his account, he recounts a young black doctoral student who details the daily discrimination he faces because of his skin color and explains how he accommodates white people who are terrified of him. Since 1990, he has been a part of the editorial board of the New York Times. He became a book review editor for The New York Times in 1985. Later, he was promoted to assistant metropolitan editor. Furthermore, he wrote the piece Just Walk on By, which was published in Ms. Magazine and was so important that it became required reading in many college classes.
From 1983 to 1985, he worked as a science reporter for the Chicago Sun-Times. From 1977 to 1981, he also taught psychology at Widener University and other Chicago-area colleges. Parallel Time, his memoir, was a nominee for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize and won the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award in 1994.
He has been a visiting fellow at the Hoover Foundation, the University of Chicago, and Yale University, among others. In addition, in 2000, he was awarded an honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters by Mount Saint Mary College.
