Byron was ranked the number 10 Junior College prospect after one season at Georgia Military College and committed to Tennessee after rejecting an offer from Ole Miss. At first, Initially a backup in his first season at Tennessee in 2021, Young led the team with 5.5 sacks and began the last 8 games recording 46 total tackles.

Due to his performance, he was named the Southeastern Conference (SEC) defensive lineman of the week and recorded 2.5 sacks in 2022 in the Volunteers Week 6 game against LSU. Byron was named to the All-SEC first team after the season.

In the third round (77th overall) in the 2023 NFL Draft Byron was selected by the Los Angeles Rams. After the Rams traded cornerback Jalen Ramsey for tight end Hunter Long, they took the 77th overall pick from the Miami Dolphins. Young was a starting outside linebacker while he was heading into his first training camp and preseason.

Byron was named a starting outside linebacker to start the season, opposite Michael Hoecht by head coach Sean McVay at the end of the NFL preseason. Against the Seattle Seahawks in the Rams’ Week 1 victory Byron made his first career start and NFL debut. Young achieved his first full career sack in the Rams’ 30-23 loss to the San Francisco 49ers the next week.

The next week, Byron acquired another half-sack in the Rams’ 16-19 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. Byron recorded his first multi-sack game in Week 9 against the Green Bay Packers, although the Rams lost 20-3. After recording three more sacks in his final five games of the season, Young completed the season.

Byron completed his recruit season leading all rookie edge rushers with one fumble recovery, two forced fumbles, 61 total tackles (42 solo), and 8 sacks. Furthermore, at the end of the season, Byron acquired PFWA All-Rookie Team honors.
