Dan Lanning is a well-reputed American football coach and former player currently working as the head coach at the University of Oregon. Initially, he worked as the outside linebackers and defensive coordinator coach at the University of Georgia from 2019 to 2021.

He played college football as a linebacker at William Jewell College from 2004 to 2007. Before his tenure at Oregon, Lanning held several assistant coaching positions at Park Hill South High School in Kansas City, Missouri, Arizona State University, the University of Pittsburgh, the University of Alabama, Sam Houston State University, the University of Georgia, and the University of Memphis.

He played college football as a linebacker at William Jewell College from 2004 to 2007. While attending William Jewell, Lanning stayed in a house on Elizabeth Street and was roommates with Trent Figg, currently an offensive analyst under Lanning at Oregon.

After he ended his playing career at William Jewell, Lanning spent three seasons working at Park Hill South High School as the defensive backs coach, wide receivers coach, and special team coordinator. Desiring to be an NCAA Division I football coach, he drove to Pittsburgh for thirteen hours to convince the coaching staff led by Todd Graham whom he had met at coaching clinics attended at Tulsa by the Park Hill South staff.

Later, Lanning was hired as a graduate assistant at Pittsburgh for one season before following Graham to Arizona State as a graduate assistant. In 2013, Lanning was elevated to the on-campus recruiting coordinator. He was hired away to be the co-recruiting coordinator and the defensive backs coach at Sam Houston State in March 2014.

In December 2015, he was hired to be the recruiting coordinator and inside linebackers coach at Memphis reuniting with Mike Norvell who served as the offensive coordinator at Arizona State when Lanning was an on-campus recruiting coordinator and graduate assistant.

In 2018, Lanning was hired as the outside linebackers coach by Georgia. He was promoted to defensive coordinator in addition to his duties as the outside linebackers coach after Bulldogs defensive coordinator Mel Tucker left to accept the head coaching position at Colorado after the 2018 season. Lanning received a raise to $1.25 million after Georgia’s victory in the Sugar Bowl. He was considered for the Kansas head coach vacancy in 2021. Nevertheless, the role ended up going to Lance Leipold.

In his final year, Georgia would finish undefeated in the regular season, going on to win the 2021-2022 College Football Playoff by defeating the Alabama Crimson Tide (33-18) in the National Championship Game as well as Michigan Wolverines (34-11) in the Orange Bowl Semi-Final.

On 11th December 2021, he was named the 35th head coach at the University of Oregon, succeeding Mario Cristobal after his departure to become the head coach at the University of Miami. He signed a six-year contract with the Ducks worth $29.1 million.
