From 1991 until 2008, and again from 2014 to 2016, Schwartz worked as a meteorologist for The Weather Channel. Before providing forecasts, Schwartz would often address viewers as “my friends,” and he had a laid-back demeanor and a pleasant sense of humor that made him popular with the audience.
In 1982, while working for the Fulton County Health Department in Georgia, Schwartz joined the Weather Channel as a newsroom assistant. In 1991, he began working as an on-camera weatherman. Schwartz was one of a handful of longtime on-camera meteorologists laid off shortly after NBC/Comcast purchased The Weather Channel in 2008, as part of a shakeup aimed at repositioning the network.

Schwartz died on July 30, 2016, following a ten-year struggle with pancreatic and stomach cancers, the latter of which he twice fought. He was 63 years old at the time. Many of Schwartz’s employees sent essays to a tribute story in the Washington Post.
