Spahr grew up in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area. His broadcast career began after graduating from Ashland University in Ohio.
He began his journey in Jacksonville, Florida, where he completed a post-graduate fellowship to learn the ropes of local television news. His first duty, in Fort Smith, Arkansas, started with a bang, as he drove through a severe line of thunderstorms that spawned tornadoes.
He landed on the other side of the front with clear skies and cool winds after crossing the Mississippi, which had whitecaps. He interviewed then-Governor Bill Clinton during his brief stint as a news and weather anchor. He was soon on his way to Columbus, Georgia.
