Derek Harper Biography

Derek Harper is a famous American former professional basketball player. Harper was a second-team All-American at the University of Illinois and the 11th overall pick of the 1983 NBA draft.

He spent 16 seasons in the National Basketball Association as a point guard with the Orlando Magic, New York Knicks, Dallas Mavericks, and Los Angeles Lakers.

He became drafted with the 11th overall pick of the 1983 NBA draft by the Dallas Mavericks. Harper spent his first ten seasons with them, averaging 6.1 assists and 15 points. The Mavericks made the playoffs in 6 out of the 10 years of His tenure with the team, and they made it to the Western Conference Finals in the 1987-1988 season.

However, the team for any other season of his time in Dallas was never able to replicate that success. In 1990-1991, His best season came when he averaged 19.7 PPG, but still wasn’t selected to be an all-star and the Mavericks with an unpleasant 28-54 record finished that year.

The Mavericks finished 11-71 in the 1992-1993 season which is one of the worst records of all time. He spent 2 more seasons with the Mavericks during the 1993-1994 season before leaving the team.
