Ellis began his football and basketball careers at James Madison High School in Brooklyn. He eventually attended Hofstra University and played wide receiver for the team. He finished with 176 receptions for 2,207 yards (12.5 yards per catch) and 22 touchdowns. He signed as a free agent with the Detroit Lions in 2006 and played against the Seattle Seahawks that season. He was cut by the Lions in August 2008, and in December 2008, he signed a contract with the Cleveland Browns until July of the following year.
He went undrafted in the 2006 NFL Draft, but he was signed as a free agency after attending rookie mini-camp as a tryout player. He was added to the Lions’ eight-person practice squad on September 3, 2006.
He appeared in the season opener against the Seattle Seahawks on September 9th, was cut from the active roster on September 11th, and then re-signed with the practice squad shortly after. On October 15, he was added to the active roster, and he started his first game against the Buffalo Bills. Ellis was released by the Lions on August 30, 2008, during the final cuts.
