Hans “Dolph” Lundgren is a Swedish actor.  He is a Swedish martial artist, actor, and filmmaker. He first became interested in martial arts when he was a child. He relocated to New York City and began taking acting training. In Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky IV, Lundgren made his debut as the major villain, an intimidating Soviet boxer named Ivan Drago.

He studied in the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm in the late 1970s and finished with a degree in chemical engineering in the early 1980s.

Lundgren made his film debut as Venz, a KGB assassin, in the 1985 James Bond thriller A View to a Kill, Roger Moore’s final feature as Agent 007.[ Grace Jones, who played the evil May Day in the film, directly recommended him Moore once observed of Lundgren, “Dolph is larger than Denmark.”Lundgren submitted films and images of himself to a distant associate of Stallone after discovering that he was looking for an imposing fighter to play Soviet boxer Ivan Drago in Rocky IV (1985). Lundgren tried out for the job but was initially turned down because he was too tall, according to him. Lundgren eventually beat out 5,000 other candidates to earn his job.

Lundgren appeared alongside Brian Benben, Betsy Brantley, Matthias Hues, and Jay Bilas in Craig R. Baxley’s sci-fi thriller Come in Peace (also known as Dark Angel) in 1990. Lundgren plays gruff Houston cop with an inner sensitivity who refuses to let the laws of police procedure stop him from following his objective to eliminate group of drug traffickers who murdered his colleague. “What attracted me to Dark Angel is that get to do more than just action,” Lundgren stated of his character. There is some romance, humor, and drama. In this one, I have some clever conversation. “I get to play character.” Lundgren featured alongside Louis Gossett Jr. in Manny Coto’s action picture Cover Up in 1991.

Lundgren appeared in Russell Mulcahy’s Silent Trigger in 1996, playing a former Special Forces operative who becomes an assassin for a covert government agency. According to the 1997 Motion Picture Guide, “this stylish but empty thriller gives square-jawed Dolph Lundgren another shot at straight-to-video immortality.” In 1997, Lundgren starred in Frédéric Forestier’s The Peacekeeper as Major Frank Cross of the United States Air Force, the only man capable of preventing the president’s assassination and averting a nuclear catastrophe. The film was shot on location in Montreal and co-starred Michael Sarrazin, Montel Williams, Roy Scheider, and Christopher Heyerdahl.[78] The action sequences in the film were appreciated. 

In 2010, Lundgren appeared as Russian spy Marco in the fourth-season opener episode of Chuck, “Chuck Versus the Anniversary,” with references to Rocky IV’s Ivan Drago.[113] He next starred as a drug-addled assassin in the ensemble action picture The Expendables, alongside Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, and Randy Couture as a group of elite mercenaries entrusted with overthrowing a Latin American dictator. Lundgren described it as “an old-school, badass action movie where people fight with knives and shoot at each other.”[114] The film received mixed reviews from critics but was an economic triumph, debuting at number one at the United States box office.
