Mair began her career at the BBC in 1987 as a sub-editor for Radio Scotland. He went on to host Good Morning Scotland, Reporting Scotland, and Eddie Mair Live in Radio Scotland’s drive-time slot. In 1993, he hosted Breakaway, BBC Radio 4’s weekly ‘travel and leisure’ show. He later joined Radio Five Live in 1994, where he hosted the Midday with Mair news show. From 1996 to 2000, he hosted the BBC/PRI show The World.

He hosted the weekly current affairs show Broadcasting House from its inception in April 1998 until 2003, when he took over PM and the show was given over to Fi Glover.
