Previously, he served as the head coach for the Memphis Grizzlies and has also served as an assistant coach for various other NBA teams.

He played his first two collegiate seasons at Oregon State and ended his career at the University of Minnesota. He spent three seasons with the Charlotte Bobcats as an assistant coach, prior to spending four seasons as an assistant coach for the Minnesota Timberwolves from 2007–2011. On July 15, 2011, Bickerstaff was hired by the Rockets as an assistant coach.

On November 18, 2015, Bickerstaff was made interim head coach of the Rockets after Kevin McHale was fired. He he made his coaching debut against the Portland Trail Blazers with a 108–103 overtime victory on that same day. He was hired as the associate head coach by the Memphis Grizzlies on June 8, 2016.

He was promoted as the Grizzlies’ interim head coach on November 27, 2017, following the firing of David Fizdale. He was named the new permanent head coach of the Grizzlies on May 1, 2018. The Grizzlies fired him on April 11, 2019, after the team failed to reach the playoffs.

The Cleveland Cavaliers named him as an assistant and associate head coach on May 19, 2019. The head coach John Beilein resigned as head coach of the Cavaliers on February 19, 2020, and Bickerstaff was announced as the new head coach. The Cavaliers announced that they had agreed on a multi-year contract with him on March 10, 2020. The Cavaliers signed Bickerstaff to a multi-year contract extension on December 25, 2021.
