He was named the Walter Camp FBS Player of the Week, Co-Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week, and Special Teams Player of the Week after an outstanding performance against Colorado on September 17, 2016. He was the first player in the conference to be named both Defensive and Special Teams Player of the Week in the same week since the special team award was added in 1994. On April 25, 2017, just two days before the draft, it was reported that Peppers tested positive for a drug test administered at the combine. The positive test resulted from a diluted sample, and additional reports revealed that Peppers drank plenty of water and were sick before traveling for the combine. Peppers met with the Baltimore Ravens and the San Francisco 49ers ahead of the draft. He was projected to be a first or second-round pick by NFL draft experts and scouts at the end of the pre-draft process.
