In 2012 and 2013 Reed studied at East Mississippi Community College. During the 2013 season, Reed assisted and led his team to a win in the NJCAA national championship. Jarran was credited with 100 career tackles, including 10.5 tackles for loss In his time with East Mississippi Community College. Jarran moved to the University of Alabama before 2014.

Jarran played in all 14 games and made 13 starts during his first year at Alabama. Kentrel recorded one sack and 55 tackles. Jarran considered entering the 2015 NFL Draft but opted against it and went back to Alabama for his senior year. In his senior season, he played in all 15 games and assisted lead his team to a College Football Playoff national champion victory.
