Jeffery Wade Ulbrich is an eminent American football retired linebacker and coach who is presently working as the defensive coordinator in the National Football League (NFL) for the New York Jets. Jeff was a college football player at Hawaii and in the 2000 NFL Draft, he was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the third round (86th overall). From 2000 to 2009 Jeff played for the 49ers.

Jeff worked for two seasons for the Seattle Seahawks as the assistant special teams coach after retiring as a player following the 2009 season. Afterward, Jeff worked at UCLA as the special teams and linebackers coach for three seasons and subsequently worked for the Atlanta Falcons as an assistant coach for six seasons.

Before Jeff moved to Gavilan College, he redshirted in his lone season at San Jose State. In his lone season at Gavilan College in Gilroy, California, he acquired team MVP and first-team All-Conference. At Hawaii, Jeff was a two-year starter. As a senior, Jeff acquired team co-captain and All-WAC first-team selection. In his senior year, he led the conference with a school-record 169 tackles (42 solo).

In the third round (86th pick overall) of the 2000 NFL Draft Jeff was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers out of the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. During his recruit season, he just saw action in four games due to a right shoulder injury. In 2001 Jeff won the starting job. Jeff began just five games at inside linebacker in 2005 prior to missing the remainder of the season with a torn biceps muscle.

In 2006, Jeff began in 9 out of 16 games. After Jeff suffered a concussion, on October 19, 2009, he was placed on injured reserve. On December 9 Jeff disclosed his plans to retire due to the concussion. Also, Jeff stated that one day he would like to become a college football coach upon retirement.

Ulbrich was employed as a special teams assistant on January 29, 2010, by the Seattle Seahawks. Jeff became the UCLA Bruins’ special teams and linebackers coach in 2012. In the spring of 2012, Jeff was promoted to Assistant Head Coach besides to his roles with the special teams and linebackers. Jeff was elevated to Defensive Coordinator in February 2014.

Two of Jeff’s linebacker group, Jordan Zumwalt and Anthony Barr, were drafted in the 2014 NFL Draft. In total defense for 2014, Jeff’s defensive unit was ranked third in the Pac-12 and Eric Kendricks the Butkus and Lott IMPACT Trophy winner linebacker led it. Anthony Barr one of Jeff’s players led the country in sacks with 13.5.

The Atlanta Falcons employed Jeff in 2015 to work as a linebackers coach. The Falcons reached Super Bowl LI and Jeff in the 2016 season, where they faced the New England Patriots. The Falcons fell in a 34–28 overtime defeat in the Super Bowl. Jeff was elevated to linebackers coach and assistant head coach in 2020. Under interim head coach Raheem Morris, Jeff was named defensive coordinator on October 12, 2020. Jeff was employed under head coach Robert Saleh as the defensive coordinator by the New York Jets on January 21, 2021.
