Jermaine’s collegiate career commenced at Independence Community College. Jermaine was featured in Last Chance U the fourth season of the Netflix documentary series where he played under Jason Brown the head coach while at Independence. Jermaine had three forced fumbles, 58 tackles, and eight sacks as a freshman. After the season, Jermaine moved to the University of Georgia.

As a sophomore, Jermaine played in every game for the Georgia Bulldogs, where he had 2.5 sacks and 20 tackles. Jermaine completed third on the team with 11 quarterback hurries and four sacks 16 total tackles as a senior. Jermaine joined the transfer portal towards the end of the season and went to Florida State for his final season of NCAA eligibility.

Jermaine was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Defensive Lineman of the Week. After Jermaine completed the season with 12 sacks and 70 tackles, and led the ACC with 18 tackles for loss, he was named the ACC Defensive Player of the Year and first-team All-ACC.

In the 2022 NFL Draft Jermaine was drafted by the New York Jets in the first round with the 26th overall pick. Johnson blocked a punt that resulted in a safety against the Buffalo Bills in Week 14. Jermaine recorded 29 total tackles and 2.5 sacks and appeared in 14 games as a rookie.
