Johnson Sakaja Biography
Arthur Johnson Koskei Sakaja is a young Kenyan politician and businessman who has been serving as the governor of Nairobi City County since August 25, 2022. He is a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) member.
Mr. Sakaja formerly served as a Nairobi senator for The National Alliance (TNA) party from 2017 until 2022. Before that, he was a dominating Member of the National Assembly for the TNA party from 2013 until 2017. From 2012 till September 9, 2016, he was the Chairman of the TNA party. TNA formed the Jubilee Coalition with 12 other political parties. He is also the President and CEO of Arthur Johnson Consultants. He founded this financial consulting company during his fourth year of education.

Johnson’s mother worked for the Kenya Prison Service and was a well-known short-distance runner. In the 1960s and 1970s, she won multiple medals. She won the East African 200-meter title after earning gold at the 1971 Championships. She died, however, at the age of 41, when her son was just 9 years old. Sakaja is the family’s final and third child. He has two older sisters about whom little is known.

His involvement in politics began during his stint as vice-chairman of the Actuarial Students Association at the university. Soon after, he was elected Chairman of the Student Organization of Nairobi University (SONU).
Mr. Sakaja entered national politics in 2005 as a driver in the political party of then-President Mwai Kibaki. He then became the director of Vijana Na Kibaki, a youth lobbying organization during Kibaki’s presidential campaign in 2007. In the 2007 general elections, Sakaja was in charge of monitoring the counting of ballots in Kibaki’s favor.
He was a member of the team that founded The National Alliance (TNA) party in 2011. It was via this party that Uhuru Kenyatta gained the presidency in 2013. Sakaja became TNA Chairman at the age of 27 in 2012, making him the world’s youngest leader of a major political party.
The TNA elected him to the National Assembly from 2013 until 2017. He served on The House Business Committee in parliament. He was the Chairperson of the Joint Committee on National Cohesion and Equal Opportunity at the same time.
He was elected as the Jubilee Party’s Nairobi City County Senator from 2017 until 2022. He was the Chairperson of the Kenya Young Parliamentarians Association while in the Senate. This is a legislative institution that promotes the mentorship of young leaders and youth empowerment. He was also the Chairman of the Labour and Social Welfare Committee.
Mr. Sakaja confirmed his intention to run for the Nairobi City governor seat in the August 9, 2022, general elections in November 2021. Despite concerns of doubt regarding his academic credentials, the IEBC approved him to run for the seat on June 7, 2022. Sakaja received 699,392 votes, while his closest challenger, Polycarp Igathe, received 573,516 votes. On August 25, 2022, he was sworn in as the governor of Nairobi City County. James Njoroge Muchiri is his deputy governor.
