Dorris began working for the Local 10 Weather Authority in 2017, just in time for Hurricane Irma. He is a native of St. Louis, who started college with the intention of studying his other passion: vehicles. Dorris enrolled in college to study automotive engineering and got a part-time job loading beer trucks with a forklift after courses at a beer distribution facility. It was here that he spent the rest of his life.
He was working in the warehouse on a particularly hot summer evening when a storm rolled in, raining and then hailing so heavily that drivers from the nearby state highway stopped into the parking lot to wait out the storm. The front of the building’s awning blew off and landed on one of the cars.
The warehouse’s aluminum siding squeaked horribly before partially collapsing. Dorris believed he was being hit by a tornado, but it turned out to be a “microburst,” which is defined as extreme straight-line winds exceeding 90 mph. Dorris, intrigued as well as terrified, transferred to the University of Oklahoma, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in meteorology and pursued a few storms when he could.
Dorris relocated to Lincoln, Nebraska, and eventually rose to the position of chief meteorologist at KLKN. He covered multiple tornadoes, severe thunderstorms, and snowstorms throughout his tenure there. He also earned the American Meteorological Society’s certified broadcast meteorologist credential, which is the highest level of qualification accessible to broadcast meteorologists.
