Before the 2003 war, Lulu traveled to Iraq on assignment and was one of the few journalists who reported on the invasion as a unilateral reporter. In November 2004 Lulu joined National Public Radio working as Mexico City bureau chief. In January 2008 Lulu went to Baghdad and oversaw NPR’s Iraq coverage for over a year.

Lulu relocated to Jerusalem in April 2009 to work as the bureau chief, a role she worked through to the end of 2012. In April 2013 Lulu opened NPR’s Brazil bureau. Due to her work in Mexico, she was awarded the 2006 Daniel Schorr Journalism Prize. Lulu was among the team that obtained the 2007 Alfred I. DuPont-Columbia University Silver Baton Award recognizing NPR’s Iraq coverage and the 2005 Peabody Award.

Lulu has been awarded the Overseas Press Club Lowell Thomas Award, the Outstanding Correspondent Gracie Award, and the 2012 City University in London XCity Award besides the Murrow and Peabody awards. Lulu disclosed on September 9, 2021, that she would depart from NPR as of October 17, 2021.   On September 30, 2021, the New York Times Company reported that Lulu would join its Opinion Audio team to work as an anchor of an explore the personal side of opinion, a new podcast that debuted on June 9, 2022.
