At Troy, Jones made his college football debut. He returned 30 kickoffs, 14 for 121 yards, 879 for 879 yards, and three touchdowns. He was named the Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year and added two pass interceptions to his defensive stats, one of which he returned for a touchdown. As a return specialist, he was also named to the second-team all-conference.

He was selected to the Sun Belt’s first team as a return specialist as a sophomore after returning 23 kickoffs for 584 yards and a touchdown. He was named to the second team as a cornerback after intercepting one pass and breaking up eight more. After his sophomore year, Jones registered in the transfer portal and announced his intent to transfer to the University of Houston.

Due to NCAA transfer regulations, Jones had to sit out one season and redshirt. He finished with 24 tackles, 2.0 tackles for loss, and one interception for the defense. Jones, a return specialist who led the country with 337 yards on 17 punt returns and one for a touchdown, was also named first-team All-American Athletic Conference.

He defeated 19th-ranked SMU 44-37 during his redshirt senior season by returning a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown with 17 seconds left. To round out the season, he was chosen for the Associated Press All-America first team as a defensive back and received the Paul Hornung Award, given to the country’s most adaptable player. He was also named first-team All-AAC as a return specialist and second-team All-AAC as a cornerback, and he was named AAC Special Teams Player of the Year.
