Michael Lee McDaniel is a popular American football coach currently serving as the head coach of the Miami Dolphins of the National Football League (NFL). A former long-time assistant to Mike and Kyle Shanahan, He started his NFL coaching career in 2005 as an intern for the Denver Broncos.

He has served as an assistant coach for the Washington Redskins, Houston Texans, Cleveland Browns, San Francisco 49ers, and Atlanta Falcons. He has appeared in two Super Bowls, one each with the Falcons and with the 49ers in 2017 and 2020 respectively.

In 2005, he was hired at the age of 22 by his hometown Denver Broncos as a coaching intern under head coach Mike Shanahan. In 2006, he was hired as an offensive assistant by the Houston Texans under head coach Gary Kubiak, whom McDaniel served along with at the Denver Broncos a season earlier. Throughout his tenure in Houston, he assisted 3 different offensive coordinators and future head coaches; Mike Sherman, Kyle Shanahan, and Troy Calhoun.

In 2009, he was hired as a running backs coach by the California Redwoods, a team from the now-defunct UFL football league under head coach Dennis Green, a former Minnesota Vikings/Arizona Cardinals. In 2011, he was hired as an offensive assistant by the Washington Redskins, reuniting with Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan, who was his mentor 6 seasons before on the Denver Broncos.

It was there where he worked along with 3 other future head coaches; Sean McVay, Matt LaFleur, and Kyle Shanahan. In 2013, he was promoted to wide receivers coach after Ike Hilliard left to join the Buffalo Bills in the same role. In 2014, he was hired as a wide receivers coach by the Cleveland Browns under new head coach Mike Pettine. Later,  in 2015 he was hired as an offensive assistant coach by the Atlanta Falcons under new head coach Dan Quinn.

In 2017, he was hired as the run game coordinator by the San Francisco 49ers under his long-time associate and new head coach Kyle Shanahan, whom he worked alongside for a total of 9 seasons on the Falcons, Browns, Redskins, and Texans.  McDaniel was elevated to offensive coordinator on January 18, 2021, after the departure of passing game coordinator Mike LaFleur, who left to join the New York Jets as their offensive coordinator.

On February 6, 2022, the Miami Dolphins hired him as their fourteenth head coach. He made his regular season head coaching debut against the New England Patriots on September 11, 2022, leading the Dolphins to a 20-7 victory, marking his first victory as a head coach. In 2005, he became the first Dolphins head coach to win their first game as Miami’s head coach since Nick Saban and the first rookie head coach in franchise history to win a season opener.
