Johnny Ventura, also known as El Caballo Mayor, was a Dominican singer and merengue and salsa bandleader. Between 1982 and 1986, the merengue legend served in the Lower House of Congress. From 1994 to 1998, he was the vice mayor of Santo Domingo, and from 1998 to 2002, he was the mayor of Santo Domingo.
He began his career as a singer when he appeared with some friends in a weekly devotional show broadcast by La Voz de la Alegra. Ventura, who is only 16 years old, took first place among the competitors. A little later, he started appearing in the programs of devotees which were sponsored by La Voz Dominicana.

Ventura became one of Latin America’s most well-known singers as a result of this.
Juan de Dios changed his name to ‘Johnny Ventura’ in 1959. He began his career as a singer in a variety of bands that performed at La Feria dances. He performed with Rondón Votau’s orchestra and, in 1961, with Dominican drummer Donald Wild’s ensemble.
Ventura was hospitalized after testing positive for COVID-19 during the COVID-19 pandemic on March 28, 2020. He declared his recovery on April 13, 2020, and that he had tested negative for the coronavirus. At the age of 81, Ventura died of a heart attack on July 28th, 2021.
