In September 2007, he joined BBC Radio 1 and co-hosted the BBC’s youth strand Switch alongside close friend and colleague DJ Annie Mac. Mac hosted a Saturday lunchtime slot while Nick hosted the show solo for 9 months.
He hosted Radio 1’s Weekend Breakfast Show from October 2008 to May 2009. After Colin Murray’s departure on 1 June 2009, he went on to present the 10 p.m.-midnight hour on BBC Radio 1. He routinely made light of how little time he had left at BBC Radio 1 and whether or not he would be able to complete his massive list of “1000 Albums Everyone Says You Should Listen To But We Only Have Time To Play One Track So Here It Is,” which had become a nightly staple on his show. Before departing for the morning program, Nick reached position 369.
On May 31, 2018, it was announced that Nick would be departing the breakfast program and would be replaced by Greg James. Nick took up the 4-7 p.m. drive time slot as a result of the change. He announced his retirement from Radio 1 on June 30, 2021, after 14 years on the air. His last show on the channel aired on August 12, 2021.
His career began on the UK entertainment channel E4, where he hosted daily shows. In September 2007, Nick relocated to Channel 4, where he co-hosted the weekdays at 7 a.m. breakfast program Freshly Squeezed alongside Alexa Chung and, more recently, Jameela Jamil.
They went on to host several award presentations for television as well as Channel 4 coverage of music events and festivals. In addition to delivering the BBC Radio 1 radio show BBC Switch, Nick and Annie Mac co-hosted the BBC Two music show Sound. On BBC One, Nick co-hosted the first-ever BBC Switch Awards presentation with Kimberley Walsh of Girls Aloud.
Nick hosted a live 6-part Channel 4 Saturday series called New Look Style the Nation in the summer of 2011, in which hopeful fashion designers fought for a job at New Look.
On June 16, 2015, it was announced that Nick would replace Louis Walsh as a judge on the twelfth series of The X Factor. Nick was chosen as the “Boys” category mentor, and he chose Mason Noise, Ché Chesterman, and Seann Miley Moore for the live shows.
After Moore in week 2 and Noise in week 4, Nick led Chesterman to the championship game, where he took third place. On February 19, 2016, Nick stated that he will not be returning to the show for its thirteenth season, and Walsh took his place.
