Orla Guerin Career
In the year 1995, Orla joined BBC. Orla was situated in Los Angeles from January 1996 and in July 1996 became the corporation’s Southern Europe correspondent. Guerin was then based in Rome until June 2000. She reported from the Basque Country in northern Spain, the Republic of Macedonia, and Kosovo during that period. Orla was based in Moscow in the second half of 2000 and covered the Kursk submarine disaster in the year 2000.
In January 2001, Guerin was appointed the BBC’s Jerusalem correspondent. The BBC made an official complaint to the Israeli government at the beginning of April 2002 after Israeli soldiers fired in the direction of Orla and her team, forcing them to find a shield while they were recording a tranquil demonstration in Bethlehem on the West Bank. The Israeli government wrote to the BBC almost two years later accusing her of a deep-seated bias against Israel in a report on a teenage would-be suicide bomber.
Her reporting was however defended by BBC. Orla was succeeded by Caroline Hawley as the BBC’s correspondent in Jerusalem. In January 2006, She became the BBC’s Africa correspondent located in Johannesburg.
Guerin was the BBC’s correspondent based in Islamabad, Pakistan after Johannesburg. During the 2019 Venezuelan presidential crisis and protests in the year 2019, She was the BBC correspondent in Caracas, the Venezuelan capital. As of now, she is based in Kyiv, Ukraine. Before joining BBC News, Guerin started her career working for newspapers in Dublin such as the Sunday Tribune. In 1987, She joined RTÉ News and became its youngest foreign correspondent when she was sent to Eastern Europe in 1990 at the age of 23. Guerin remained at RTÉ until 1994. Her reports from Eastern Europe for RTÉ Radio won her a Jacob’s Award in 1992.
In the 1994 European Parliament elections, she left RTÉ to run as an Irish Labour Party candidate. Orla had been hand-picked by Dick Spring, the then-Labour Party leader. However, she did not win a seat. Orla became position 7 out of 15 candidates with 6% of the vote.
