Earlier on, He was a professional Baseball pitcher who served for various major teams including St. Louis Cardinals, Baltimore Orioles, Chicago Cubs,  Cleveland Indians, and Los Angeles Dodgers. He was famously known for his nickname “The Red Baron”. During his free time, Rick enjoys traveling, reading, and watching baseball.

Soon after retiring from playing baseball, Sutcliffe was hired by the Idaho Falls Braves as their pitching coach. A year later Rick left and relocated to San Diego, where he became a color commentator at Channel 4 for six years. He joined ESPN in 1998 as an analyst and still serves at the station to date.

He also worked for ESPN Radio as a guest analyst during the MLB playoffs. Rick in March 1999 fully joined the station and has featured on Wednesday Night Baseball. Recently in 2018, with Rick, ESPN officially announced that they had signed a multi-year extension. Since 2010, Sutcliffe has provided commentary coverage of the World international.
