Kevin Stitt Julius Jones
With no word from the governor’s office on whether he will grant clemency for death row inmate Julius Jones, Gov. Kevin Stitt has a few options he can take.
In just 22 hours, Jones is set to be executed in McAlester unless the government steps in. Wednesday was the third straight day of vigils at the State Capitol, as family members see Jones for what could be the last time.
After the Oklahoma Pardon and Parole Board has twice recommended sparing his life over doubts about his guilt and concerns over his sentence, it is now up to the Governor.
- Deny clemency, which would let the execution go forward
- Grant clemency and change the sentence to life in prison
- Grant clemency and allow the possibility of parole
- Not acting at all, which would let the execution go forward
The latter option would be somewhat surprising. Back when the board first recommended commutation in September, the governor said no because he wanted to decide after a clemency hearing instead.
Oklahoma governors have historically followed these recommendations but sometimes haven’t. Former Gov. Frank Keating spoke with KOCO 5 last night about how he treated these types of decisions.
“This individual proof beyond a reasonable doubt is the killer… every one of the prosecutors said yes that’s correct. Ok. Then, I would bring the defense attorney in and ask the same question,” Keating told KOCO 5.
Wednesday night, the state is waiting to hear what Stitt will do. He could release a decision at any time. If clemency is not granted, Jones will be executed in McAlester at 4 p.m.

Sarah has now dedicated her life to erasing the stigma surrounding mental health,
“As a child, I was not allowed to talk about the issues in my family because my mom was afraid we’d be judged or what people would think, that keeps families isolated and keeps them from getting the resources to help them walk through their lives,” said Stitt.
