In June 1976, Steve went to at Manchester’s Lesser Free Trade Hall, to attend the Sex Pistols gig, and their manager Malcolm McLaren introduced him to vocalist Howard Devoto and guitarist Pete Shelley who were searching for a bassist for their band, Buzzcocks. Then later on John Maher joined as the drummer and six weeks later Buzzcocks played their first concert.
He also has written different songs for Buzzcocks such as his most known song “Harmony in My Head”, a Top 40 hit in 1979, “Airwaves Dream”, “Sitting Round At Home”, “You Know You Can’t Help It”, “Mad Mad Judy”, Pete Shelley), “Love Is Lies” (perhaps the first Buzzcocks song featuring an acoustic guitar), and, “Autonomy”, “Fast Cars” (co-written with Howard Devoto.
