Since joining ABC News in 1997, he has made reports to World News with David Muir, Good Morning America, and other station broadcasts and platforms. Prior to joining ABC News in 1997, he worked at WREX-TV in Rockford, Illinois, WOOD-TV in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and KOMO-TV in Seattle. His work has carried him all across the country, from covering riots in Baltimore and Ferguson, Missouri, to the 2000 United States presidential election recount in Florida, to the 2015 Charleston church tragedy that killed nine black parishioners.
He became the focus of political debate as he was one of many African-American reporters who cried live on the air on the night Barack Obama was elected as the country’s first black president. He also covered the murders of Rayshard Brooks and Ahmaud Arbery.
Steve co-created and produced the ABC podcast “Soul of a Nation: Tulsa’s Buried Truth,” which delves into the 1921 Tulsa race riot using historical recordings and interviews with historians. As a Black American with a high school and college education, it astounds me that up until lately, I was unaware of the specifics of the Tulsa massacre, and I think it is unfortunate. It speaks a lot about how we, as Americans, record bigoted and nasty history.
