After graduating, Steve moved to Moscow and spent the next 15 years at the Moscow State Technological University STANKIN teaching English. Rosenberg then secured work with CBS News in the network’s Moscow bureau and served six years as a translator, assistant producer, and producer. He was on the CBS crew covering the first war in Chechnya from 1994 to 1996. Moreover, in 1997 he became a producer in the BBC’s Moscow bureau and was appointed reporter for the BBC in Moscow in 2000.

The government of Ukraine issued a decree banning several journalists, including Steve, from entering the country over his coverage of the war in Donbas in 2015. He conducted a high-profile interview with Belarus’ authoritarian leader Alexander Lukashenko in November 2021. In addition, he was appointed Russia Editor of BBC News to strengthen the BBC’s coverage of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in March 2022.
