She would occasionally perform at local talent events, churches, and weddings. She had only recorded her first song alongside her sister Latocha when she was nine years old. She later attended Tri-Cities High School of the Performing Arts in Atlanta, Georgia, before transferring to Tri-Cities High School in East Point, Georgia, where she graduated in 1993.
Tamika and her friend and sister La Tocha Scott started singing together in school and founded the band Xscape. The ladies were introduced to record executive Ian Burke, who later became the group’s manager, after their significant debut performance at BET’s Teen Summit in 1992. Xscape quickly drew the notice of Jermaine Dupri, who signed the group to his So So Def Recordings label.
Furthermore, the band’s debut album, Hummin’ Comin’ at ‘Cha, debuted at number seventeen on the US Billboard 200 and number three on the Top R&B Albums chart. It was their first commercial triumph in a year and allowed them to create two hit singles, “Just Kickin’ It” and “Understanding,” which both reached at number one on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and were also charted in the top ten on the Billboard Hot 100.
Following that, it was followed by the publication of other singles albums, including “Love on My Mind,” “Tonight,” “Freedom,” and “Off the Hook.”Jermaine Dupri produced the majority of their album, which included guest vocals from MC Lyte. Tamika went on to star in Donald Gray’s musical stage dramas “Man Of My Dreams” and “A Good Man Is Hard To Find” after Xscape’s dissolution. She played the spunky Milay in Tyler Perry’s smash hit “Meet The Browns.” Tamika wrote and produced four songs for Tyler Perry’s “Daddy’s Little Girls” soundtrack, which is now available in shops.
She also has a song on the soundtrack called “Greatest Gift,” which is considered the love ballad of the century! Tamika’s successful songs have been recorded by Xscape, Jaheim, Musiq Soulchild, Anthony Hamilton, Yolanda Adams, and Letoya. She also contributed to Jim Carey’s “The Mask” album, wrote and produced for the “Hard Ball Soundtrack” starring Keanu Reeves, and wrote and performed the title song for Tyler Perry’s “Why Did I Get Married” soundtrack.
