Donald Trump engaged a new counsel on the night of his arraignment in New York City. Todd Blanche, a white-collar defense attorney, has joined the former president’s legal team to represent him in the lawsuit launched against him by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.
According to Fox News, Blanche will provide “extra ammunition” to Trump’s defense team, as the politician is set to be charged with 34 felony counts on April 4 after being charged with paying hush money to adult film star Stormy Daniels while running for president in 2016.
Susan R. Necheles and Joe Tacopina, who has been representing Trump in the Bragg-led probe that resulted in his indictment on March 30, are also on his criminal defense team.
Blanche previously worked as a federal prosecutor. He left New York City’s oldest law firm, Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft, where he was a partner for five years, to join Trump’s legal team. His intention to leave the white-collar defense and investigations practice was revealed in an email sent to the firm. Politico was the first to break the story after receiving the email.
He was a former assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York for nine years before joining the New York legal practice. He has considerable experience investigating and prosecuting white-collar crimes such as tax fraud, money laundering, Medicaid and federal program fraud, bank and wire fraud, racketeering, killings, armed robberies, guns, and drug charges.
He has represented political personalities affiliated with Trump, including Paul Manafort. Manafort, the politician’s former campaign chief from May to August 2016, worked with Blanche after the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office indicted him in 2019 on mortgage fraud and other state offenses. He also defended Igor Fruman, a Rudy Guiliani adviser who took a plea agreement in a case involving campaign funding and was given a year in jail. He admitted to breaking international campaign regulations and will be sentenced in January 2022.
