From 2000 to 2002 Todd played for a semi-pro football team known as the Minnesota Maulers as a quarterback, and assisted the Maulers reach three consecutive championship games. Todd’s coaching career commenced at Eden Prairie High School where he was employed to work as a 9th grade B team offensive coach. In 2000 the Eagles won the Class 5A state title over Matt Birk’s Cretin Durham Hall Raiders while he was coaching at his high school.

Todd was employed to work as a special teams assistant coach and defensive assistant coach by the St. Louis Rams in 2006. Todd worked there for two seasons and afterward worked as the Rams’ defensive quality control coach. The Detroit Lions employed Todd to serve as an offensive quality control coach in 2009.

In 2010 Todd worked as the assistant quarterback coach and in 2011 he was elevated to work as the quarterbacks coach. Matthew Stafford averaged 17 interceptions, 4,885 yards, and 30 touchdowns from 2011 to 2013 while he was working coaching quarterbacks in Detroit. Todd served as the Buffalo Bills’ quarterback coach in 2014.

Todd was employed in 2015 under head coach Jack Del Rio by the Oakland Raiders to work as the quarterbacks coach. Todd is credited for assisting Derek Carr become the first Raiders quarterback to be drafted since 2002 to a Pro Bowl. Pro Football Focus named Todd on January 20, 2015, as Quarterbacks Coach of the Year. In 2017 Todd was elevated to offensive coordinator after working for two years coaching Raiders quarterbacks, after the Raiders opted not to renew Bill Musgrave’s contract. Carr threw for 19 interceptions, 7,924 yards, and 60 touchdowns with two Pro Bowl appearances after Todd coached him from 2015 to 2016.

After dropping from 12–4 to 6–10 due to a major regression of the offense, Todd was sucked together with head coach Jack Del Rio and the entire of Del Rio’s staff on January 1, 2018. The Minnesota Vikings employed Todd on February 19, 2018, as a senior offensive assistant. Todd was shifted from senior offensive assistant to tight ends coach to fill the vacant role, while tight ends coach Clancy Barone was moved to coach the offensive line, together with Sparano’s assistant offensive line coach, Andrew Janocko after the unexpected and sudden passing of Tony Sparano the Vikings offensive line coach before training camp in 2018.

The Tennessee Titans employed Todd under head coach Mike Vrabel as their tight ends coach on January 26, 2019. Todd was elevated to offensive coordinator on January 29, 2021, replacing Arthur Smith, who left two weeks before to work as the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons. The Titans completed 15th in points scored and 17th in overall offense in his first season as offensive coordinator.
