Tristin appeared in 13 games, one as a starter, and totaled 30 tackles while being primarily a special teams player in 2017 as a true freshman at Sam Houston State University. In 2018, Tristin began all 11 games for the team and posted four pass breakups, 2.0 sacks, 48 tackles, and 6.0 tackles-for-loss, being sixth on the team in tackles.
In the 2019 season, Tristin played 12 games, five as a starter, tallying 49 tackles, an interception, and a sack. In the 2020–21 season, Tristin was part of the national championship team, while having 50 tackles and two interceptions he was named second-team All-Southland Conference. In 2021 as a senior Tristin repeated as a second-team all-conference selection.
